KITE SURFERS
Woodman Point is a wide sandy beach projecting half a kilometer out into the sea forming a natural spit which is almost unique in Western Australia. The summer sea breeze blows strongly from the south west across the spit allowing kite surfers to travel it's length on the leeward side with the full force of the wind filling their sails.
They sail very close to the shoreline and often choose a 'jump zone' just a few metres from the beach. Kite surfers are no different from the rest of us and they love an opportunity to show off their skills, particularly if there is a camera present! All of my kite surfing photographs have been taken here, and nearly always in the 'jump zone'.
Kite Aerial Photography is almost mandated by the powerful sea breeze which is often over 30 km/h, building to 40 km/h near sunset. I use a wide range of kites to lift over a kilogram of camera and control gear, allowing me to track the kite surfers as they approach the jump zone, pressing the shutter at the decisive moment.
