KITE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Kite Aerial Photography or KAP as it is known, has been around since cameras were invented. Kites were used to lift cameras for shots of Paris in 1900 and the San Francisco earthquake in 1906.
The concept is simple really: fly a kite up to about 30 metres, attach a camera to the string at ground level, let the string out for another 30 metres and you have a flying camera taking shots from about 30 metres above ground level.
Of course there are all sorts of complexities to do with the controlling the kite, pointing the camera and the triggering mechanism but in a good wind a big kite can lift over a kilogram of camera gear.
